CHI’s work began in Russia over 20 years ago. We have had few contacts over the last few years, but that is changing. This page report several visits. We now have regular contact with Professor Elena Kondratieva, deputy head of Russian CF in Moscow. We also have good contact with Ostrova (Islands) Foundation which is a well funded Russian charity. They have special interest in CF and have equipped some twenty small gymnasia offering kinesitherapy (though Julian believes that this is less effective than conventional physiotherapy).
CHI to Russia 2013
Rosie Barnes and Tony Wolstenholme attended conferences in St Petersburg (17-18 May) and Moscow (24-25 May). The first was well organised by Ostrova (Islands) Foundation. The second conference was exclusively for Russian medical specialists. The program is included at the end of this page.
Rosie Barnes’ presentation to both emphasised the vital all embracing role of the CF Trust: supporting parents, funding medical research, coordinating peer review of clinical practice and presenting a strong unified voice to government. Unfortunately Chris Rolles, who had been strongly invited to attend to mark the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Moscow- Southampton CF project, was unable to go due to personal circumstances. He had met with Tony to pass over many project papers relating to the 3 year project between 1993 and 1996. From this, Tony had prepared a presentation on “Lessons learnt from the Russian experience”. Tony also filmed Chris sending the congress delegates greetings and good wishes. This short video had been projected at the conference along with a “Chris”‘ presentation, delivered by Tony in Russian.
These presentations are available here:
- Rosie Barnes: The Role of a National Charity or NGO
- Chris Rolles: Lessons learnt – Moscow – Southampton in the mid 1990s
- Chris Rolles and Tony Wolstenholme: Извлеченные уроки – Мо?ква – Саутгемптон в ?ередине 1990-х
- Congress Proceedings (Russian)
Feedback confirmed that the project had transformed the service, and it was still deemed very successful. Major funding by Solvay had also been very helpful. Life expectancy in the Moscow region is more or less at European standards; in St Petersburg it is somewhat lower but the quality of CF care in remoter regions of the Russian Federation is much lower.
Since these conferences, Professor Elena Kondratieva, deputy head of Russian CF in Moscow. has visisted London a few times. These have mainly been visits to the Royal Brompton Hostpital, but she has also met up with Rosie Barnes, Tony Wolstenholme and Jim Hopwood. More details, especially on her first visit, are available here.
